Essential Oil Guide
- Essential oils are potent substances, and everyone reacts differently to them.
- All essential oils should be diluted before applying to the skin, and appropriate cautions should always be taken. Always dilute if applying any oil to the skin, and never use it directly. Irritation can occur in people with sensitive skin.
- When trying out a new essential oil, it's a good idea to do a patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Mix one drop of the essential oil you're testing into a tsp of base oil and dab a tiny amount on the inside of the arm or wrist area. Wait 24 hours to ensure no redness or irritation occurs.
- If you are pregnant or nursing, consult your doctor before using essential oils. Use essential oils with care and only under the proper guidance of an expert while pregnant, nursing, or if you have liver damage, epilepsy, cancer, or other serious health problems.
- Keep essential oils out of reach of babies/children and pets and consult a qualified aromatherapy expert before using essential oils with babies/children or around pets/animals.
- Keep essential oils away from your eyes.
- Essential oils are flammable — if a spill occurs, wipe up carefully. Be careful around furniture, as undiluted essential oils can damage varnished surfaces.
- Some citrus oils are photosensitizing – do not use them before exposure to sunlight or tanning beds.
- Do not use essential oils internally unless under a doctor's or qualified practitioner's supervision. Essential oils are concentrated substances and could be dangerous if ingested. Using oils in massage or inhalation is safer and can be very effective.
- When inhaling essential oils, it's wise to take breaks and keep babies/children, pregnant women, and pets out of the room while diffusing fats, as fumes can harm them.
- It's always important to consult a doctor before you use any essential oil to treat any infection or illness.
